INDIANPOLIS, Reuter: U.S. gymnastics’ newest star, Kristie Phillips, helped her team to a Pan American Games gold medal but she was outshone in the performance by her teammate Sabrina Mar.
The U.S. team rolled over the opposition to finish nearly 10 points ahead of Cuba with Canada a distant third. The U.S. team score of 385.95 beat the Pan American Games record which had stood since 1963.
Phillips, who has taken over the mantle of 1984 Olympic Champion Mary Lou Retton, carried the torch during the Games opening ceremonies two weeks ago.
But last night, her light was eclipsed by Mar, who ended the evening with 77.55 points to Phillips’ 77.475 in front of a full house of 10,000 people at the Hoosier Dome.
