In a symbolic straight fight the 72-yr-old Narayanan trounced Kaka Joginder Singh alias Dharti Pakkad (Ind) by 700 votes to just one.

Narayanan succeeds S.D.Sharma who has since been elected president of India.

There were 10 invalid votes. The total votes polled in the elections were 711 which forms 92% of the total 768 electorate.
