AMRITSAR, Punjab, India: July 2, Reuter: A journalist and political activist was killed on Saturday by unidentified gunmen in the north Indian state of Punjab, police said.

Manjit Singh, head of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s Congress Party (I) in a village near Amritsar, edited the Punjabi language weekly “Sangarsh” (Struggle) in which he often expressed anti-Sikh views.

Friends said Singh had received death threats objecting to his writings rather than to his political work.

He is the fourth journalist among more than 1,400 people killed in Punjab so far this year.
