SRINAGAR: Militants Tuesday kidnapped brother and brother-in law of Bihar governor Mohammd Shafi Qureshi while curfew was imposed on apple town in north Kashmir Sopore following protest demonstrations

Mohammad Latif Qureshi brother of Shafi Qureshi and Mohammad Syed Khan brother in-law of Shafi Qureshi were abducted by activists of lesser known militant outfit the Mujahideen –E-Fil-Islam. Latif Qureshi was abducted while he was on his way to Srinagar from Baramulla and Khan was abducted at security zone of Batwara.

Demonstrations were staged in Sopre town against killing of 15 persons and wounding of 10 in encounters between militants and security forces Monday.

Situation in Sopore town where army was called out immediately after the encounters was described as “tense and surcharged.”

An official spokesman said 14 persons four of them militants and a security man were killed and five persons one of them a security man wounded in the encounters

Fearing eruption of trouble authorities imposed curfew as relatives of killed staged demonstrations against alleged excesses by security forces when Lt.Gen. M.A.Zaki adviser to governor arrived in town for on-the-spot assessment of situation Tuesday.

Security forces fired few shots into air to disperse demonstrators after mild cane charge proved ineffective Gen Zaki in charge of home assured prominent citizens including lawyer’s traders and human right activists of area of an “impartial enquiry” into the allegation.
