ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Wednesday said it would “respect” UN resolution imposing sanctions against Libya but at same time move world body for protection of interests of 20000 Pakistan nationals who are employed in that country.

“Pakistan has consulted Islamic countries and general view is that one is obliged to comply with resolution 748” clamping air and arms embargo against Libya for not handing over two suspects in Lockerbie bombing case a foreign office spokesman told a weekly press briefing here.

He said that an Inter-ministerial committee meeting was held in foreign office to safeguard Pakistan’s national interests with Libya with which it has “significant economic ties

“It is a matter of dismay that despite efforts by Arab league and UN secretary general a solution has not been found so far. We hope that continuing diplomatic efforts will succeed in defusing situation and a mutually acceptable solution will be found” he said.

Spokesman said that modalities available in Montreal convention for suppression of unlawful acts against civil aviation to solve issue through bilateral negotiations & other measures should have been first exhausted before imposition of sanctions against Libya.
