NEW DELHI(PTI): At least two more battalions of security forces would had reached the troubled northeastern Indian state of Manipur Oct.1, (o assist the army and paramilitary forces battling insurgents and warring ethnic groups, state government sources said on Sept.30.
State Chief Minister R.K.Dorendra Singh called on the governor Lt Gen Y.K.Nayar at Imphal on Wednesday and held long deliberations on ways and means to tackle the volatile situation there, the sources here said.
The sources ruled out the immediate possibility of imposition of President’s rule in the state.
The governor, during his stay here, held a series of discussions on the situation with president Dr.Shankar Dayal Sharma, prime minister P.V.N.Rao, Minister of state for home Rajesh Pilot and other senior officials.
Ethnic clashes, led by the banned national socialist council of Nagaland (Muivah faction) and the Kuki national army, with their followers among the tribes, have led to the death of over 300 persons during the past 10 months.
The chief minister, the sources said, briefed the govemor, who has earlier served as a general officer commanding in the region The sources said the chief minister expressed hope that the situation would improve with the deployment of more forces in the affected areas, particularly the remote hill districts of the state.
