KANPUR: Five people were killed in a fresh outburst of communal violence in this north Indian city as the army called out to assist the civil authorities, marched through the streets in a bid to scare away arsonist.

Authorities said the situation Friday was peaceful and under control with no report of any untoward incidents.

Two of the five victims died when police fired on a mob indulging in arson and looting. Three more bodies were picked up from curfew bound areas.

Curfew was slapped soon after the army moved into the trouble torn areas.
