Dear Readers:
My name is Anu Grewal and lam a Sikh student, currently a Junior at Tokay High School in Lodi, CA, Because of my continual involvement in student government and other school related activities, I was recently nominated as a Congressional Scholar to represent the Sikh community and California at the National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC) held annually in Washington D.C.
The Congressional Youth Leadership Council, an educational organization with over 300 members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives, sponsors the NYLC. Their goal, essentially, is 10 give us the opportunity to see history in the making by actually meeting the people who shape American politics, policies, and laws.
Our activities are coordinated around the theme, “The Leaders of Today Meeting the Leaders of Tomorrow.” We will discuss 4 different topic every day of the six day conference; the media, the judiciary, the executive, the legislative, and foreign affairs are just a few. I have enclosed a sample of our itinerary for your review.
My participation in the NYLC depends on whether I can raise $1211 in scholarship funds, (The conference tuition is $730 and my travel to Washington from San Francisco $481.)
I’m hoping that The World Sikh News will assist me with any part of the expense. Even a small amount would make a big difference to me. I have also contacted many other local business asking for assistance, All the names of my sponsors will be printed in the local newspapers and turned in to the Council.
Attending the NYLC will enhance my education in a way that no textbook can, hope you share my belief that as citizens we have a responsibility to know how our government works. The NYLC is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to get an insider’s look at our government at work and meet with the individuals whose decisions affect all of us.
