NEW DELHI: Yashpal Sharma the doughty warrior batsman from Punjab has called it a day.
At an informal get-together here Saturday the 36-year-old veteran of many a battle for India announced his retirement from first class cricket.
Yashpal who last played for India in 1985 has not figured in any first class fixture this season.
He said he had made up his mind to quit in 1988 when he was not selected for the north zone team in the Duleep trophy and other tournaments.
Though I am convinced I still have a lot to contribute I thought it was time I gave way to others he said. For the statistical minded Yashpal Sharma played in 37 tests and in 59 innings 11 times not out he hit up 1606 runs for an average of 3345 his highest was 140 against England at Madras in 1982.
He had to his credit two centuries nine half-centuries and 16 catches with one wicket for 17 runs Yashpal’s figures in limited over cricket (42 matches 40 innings 9 not outs 883 runs 89 highest and 28.48 average) may not be that very impressive but no one can take away from him the credit for being one of the heroes of India’s prudential cup victory in 1983.
