Bhai Tara was a water carrier. He lived in the time of Guru Nanak. Bhai Tara used to carry water in a * “Muskh” and put out village fires that the Mogul army set to persecute the people.

In that time it was forbidden to put out fires that were set by the Moguls, but Bhai Tara disobeyed these orders and continued to do his duty against all odds. He was captured and brought before Babar, the Mogul emperor. Babar asked Bhai Tara why he disobeyed his orders and mocked that his little water could not possibly extinguish the fire. Bhai Tara said, “I want to do what my Guru wants me to do, I am not concerned with the outcome, I leave it to Waheguru.” After he said this Bhai Tara was beheaded. Bhai Tara went down in history as the first Sikh martyr.

*Mushki: A person who carries water in a sack called Mushk which is made of buffalo skins.

**WE MUST PUT OUT THE “FIRES” IN INDIA WHICH ARE AFFECTING THE SIKHS, BY DOING OUR DUTIES WELL JUST LIKE BHAI TARA DID IN THE VILLAGES OF PUNJAB.
