AMSTELDEEN, Netherlands, Reuter: West Germany started their defence of the champions’ trophy men’s hockey tournament with a confident 31 win over Britain.

Two penalties by Stefan Bloecher and a goal by Carsten Fischer gave the Germans revenge for England’s dramatic 32 win in the semifinals of the World Cup last October.

The West Germans went ahead after 10 minutes with Bloecher’s first penalty and increased their lead in the 30th minute when fullback Carsten Fischer blasted in from a short corner.

Two minutes later John Shaw deflected a free hit from Robert Clift to narrow the gap but Bloecher’s second penalty in the 56th minute put the game beyond doubt.

Neil Hawgood scored twice as world champions Australia cruised to a 41 first round win over Argentina.

Hawgood put the World Cup winners one up after 20 minutes but the Argentines battled back with a goal by Marcelo Mascheroni.

In the second half Hawgood struck again and goals from Mark Hager and Peter Haselhurst sealed the win.
