The United Nation’s Fourth World Conference on Women’s Rights will be held in Beijing in September of this year. Unfortunately, the WSO was ‘not included on the list of organizations recommended to the Commission on the Status of Women for accreditation to the Beijing Conference. Though we have been denied access to speak to governments at the Beijing Conference, the WSO may still attend the conference to represent the interests of Sikh women to all other Non-Governmental Organizations who are willing to take our message to the governments of the United Nations. Although we are currently limited lack of funding to send delegates to this conference, it is important to raise awareness of the Sikh view on the status of women at a worldwide level. Few people have heard or understood the significance of Guru Nanak’s message of equality for all humanity regardless of sex, caste, race, or religion, Indeed, Guru Nanak’s message Of equality and justice was revolutionary in its times, and even today, Sikhism remains unique in that these basic tenets, also espoused in the UN Charter of Rights, are enshrined in our most sacred scriptures, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
