RAMPURA PHUL: The Center has waived off the entire loan money (about 6,600 crore) given to Punjab to curb “terrorism” as promised by Prime Minister P,V. Narasimha Rao during his Ludhiana visit a few months ago. This was announced by Chief Minister Beant Singh. Mr. Singh claimed that he had received a communication from the Prime Minister’s Office about waiving off the Punjab’s debt. He thanked the Prime Minister for fulfilling his promise. He lashed out at his political adversaries who were spreading false information that the Central government had refused to write off the loan money.

 

Beant Singh said that the waiving of the loan was a landmark achievement and the state government would now have enough funds to accelerate its developmental plans.

The Chief Minister said that the Congress party had been introducing many programs for those who live under poverty line, laborers, scheduled castes and the government employees. He said that the government would announce a package of benefits for these classes soon. He said that only the Congress party was capable of keeping country integrated.

Beant Singh said that his government had reduced registry fee on land to give relief to farmers and other people. He said that the state government had also decided to fix time limit for the registration of a land deeds.

The Chief Minister also announced sub tehsil status to Bagha Purana in Faridkot district and Bhagta, Bhaika in Bathinda district.
