WASHINGTON Reuter: U.S officials expressed delight at King Hassans decision to tear up the treaty of Union Morocco signed with Libya two years ago.

“Super what more can I say” said one official who declined to be identified.

There was no immediate formal reaction from Washington officials said news reports of the treaty’s abrogation from Rabat was the first they had heard.

Washington was deeply offended Hassans agreement to the treaty with Libya a country the United States sees as an enemy.

Publicly the U.S. reaction to the treaty was muted but officials said the anger ran deep at an old ally signing such a document with Tripoli.

They said the public reaction had been deliberately low-key because Washington took the view that like similar treaties Libya has signed with other Arab countries it would come to nothing.

A public display of anger would have only offended Hassan and made a continuation of good relations difficult. Today’s announcement had shown the U.S.S policy to be right they said.
