LUDHIANA: The Ludhiana police have arrested one person in connection ‘with last Wednesday’s bomb blast, here.

The Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr. Hardip Singh Dhillon said that Ram Singh (20), son of late Jathedar of Akal Takht, Bhai Gurdev Singh Kaonke, has been taken into custody in this case while his younger brother, Hira Singh (18), who was also picked up with him, has been let and told to join investigations as ‘and when required.

 It is learnt that the two were picked up around midnight from their residence at Kaonke village near Jagraon by about 20 plainclothesmen, travelling in a Maruti Gypsy, two Maruti cars and some other vehicles sans number plates.

Interestingly, earlier in the day, on coming to know about the midnight swoop, Mr. Simranjit Singh Mann, president of the Akali Dal (Amritsar), rushed a representation to Mr. Justice Kuldip Singh of the Supreme Court, seeking his intervention, He pointed ‘out that the police had earlier picked up Bhai Kaonke three years ago. Later, it claimed that he had escaped from custody while in reality, he was tortured to death.

 Meanwhile, SSP Dhillon said that the police was also verifying the antecedents of Pritam Singh, one of those injured in the blast. Presently undergoing treatment at the CMC Hospital, the man had told the police that he hailed from Kapurthala and had left home without informing his family, following a dispute. The police are keeping a watch on him. Meanwhile, the shopkeepers in Gur Mandi, here, downed their shutters in panic today following a bomb scare.

The rumor that was spread by two strangers, posing as CBI officials, led to the arrest of one of them while his associate managed to flee.

The imposter was identified as Ferozo Khan of Rurki,  Mr. Dhillon said his antecedents were also being verified.
