MADRAS, India, Sept. 17, Reuter: Police opened fire on farmers demonstrating for drought relief on Thursday in the South Indian State of Tamil Nadu, killing at least 10 people, official radio State-run All India Radio said the 10 protesters were killed when they became unruly and blocked traffic.

Earlier State government spokesman L. Pillai said police opened fire in three places in South Arcot district, 200 km (125 miles) south of the State Capital Madras.

Pillai said police fired sporadically for 30 minutes just before dawn after the farmers, who had blocked roads, clashed with members of opposition Dravida Munnetra Khazhagam party who were returning from a political rally in Madras.
