BOMBAY: Sri Lanka has called off a proposed tour of India in December and January because their players have other commitments, an Indian cricket official said on Wednesday.

Ranbir Singh, Secretary of the board of control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told reporters after a board meeting that Sri Lankan administrators had said seven members of the national team were playing in Australia and the rest in Bangladesh.

The two countries agreed in outline at the Asian Cricket conference in Dhaka last month that Sri Lanka would tour India in place of England.

England called off their tour after the Indian government said it would refuse visas to Captain Graham Gooch and seven other team members with South African connections,

At domestic level, Singh said the board had agreed to set up a committee to inquire into a row which followed veteran international Batsman Mohinder Amarnaths commission from the current test series against New Zealand.

‘Amarnaths described the selectors as a “bunch of jokers,” at a news conference.
