New DELHI, India: Arab states have protested to India for agreeing to play Davis Cup tennis tie against Israel, and want New Delhi to reverse its decision, Arab Diplomats said here.

India announced last week that their Davis Cup team would take on Israel in a second round match here on July 2426.

“It is a decision that has greatly shocked us and we would like the Indian government to change its mind”, said Haga Khashif Badri, Chief Representative of the League of Arab States.

Mrs. Badri, a Sudanese, said heads of Arab missions here had conveyed their missions here had conveyed their “anguish and dismay” to the Indian External Affairs Ministry.

“The decision is a reversal of all that India has stood for and is clearly a mistake”, she added. “There is still time, the mistake can be corrected”.

NEW DELHL, India: Punjab has been the storehouse of champions, consistently churning out sportsmen of repute. Grewal superintending engineer of Punjab state electricity board acquired the distinction of being the first Indian to be appointed as the Chief Commissioner (Umpire) by the Cycling International Union. He will supervise the Asian cycling meet to be held in Indonesia from July 11 to 19.

BAHRAIN: Next year couia well be the biggest year for Indian track star P.T. Usha.

This was stated by her coach O.M. Nambiar during their visit to Bahrain recently.

Nambiar said: “I have studied the career statistics of leading woman athletes and most of them

peaked at the age of 24. And considering that Usha will be turning 24 soon, we could well see the best from Usha”.

Usha was in Bahrain to receive what probably ranks as the biggest recognition of her chequered career the Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa award named after Bahrain’s Crown Prince and Commander-in-chief.

BOMBAY: Former world billiards champion Michael Ferreira with three World Amateur titles under his belt is now chancing his luck in the professional circuit, at the three cushion Billiards Tournament, being held in Belgium.
