CHICAGO, IL: Congressman Dan Burton was presented with the First Sikh Heritage Award for his role in championing the cause of Sikh human rights in India. The award was presented at the annual meeting of the Association of Sikh Professionals held in Hyatt Regency in Chicago on September 3, 1988.

The award consisted of $2000/ and a beautiful plaque with Khanda and an inscription from congressman Burton’s speech:

“Sikhs have never submitted to oppression, they are not submitting it now and they will never submit to it in future.”

The evening banquet was attended by over 250 Sikhs. Besides the Chief Guest, Hon. Dan Burton, six Mayors and their representatives from Chicago and suburbs were also present. Mayor of Chicago declared Sept 3 as the Sikh Day. Mr. J.S. Sethi and Pinki Kaur Sethi represented Houston at the Banquet.
