NEW DELHI, India, Dec. 27, Reuter: Parts of the Sikh holy city of Amnritsar were put under indefinite curfew today after unknown gunmen killed eight in a fresh spell of violence, police said.

They told the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency that three gunmen shot dead a doctor. so far unnamed, near Hoshiarpur and four members of a family in another part of the town last night.

Three people shot dead today included two local Congress (I) party activists, PTI said, but it gave no details.

Police said they arrested eight suspects in connection with the latest killings during house to house searches in Amritsar, which they described as “highly tense”.

They earlier arrested three people following the killings on Thursday.

Nearly 700 people have been killed in Punjab this year in an campaign for an independent Sikh state.
