BOMBAY: Cricket minnows Sri Lanka, led by new skipper Arjuna Ranatunga, arrived here Tuesday morning from Colombo with hopes of doing well in the six-nation MRF series from the Nehru Centenary Cup Tournament beginning on October 15.
Despite the fact that the team has played very few international matches in the recent past Ranatunga and manager Muntaz Yusuf were confident of putting up a good show in the tournament.
“It is a very important tournament for us as we are proceeding to Australia in November to play two tests and the triangular one day Benson and Hedges Championship. We have a young, good all round side and we hope to do well,” Ranatunga said.
Ranatunga and Yusuf, who is also a national selector and the assistant honorary secretary of the Lankan Cricket board, said the team was picked from among 24 probables attending at camp at Colombo.
“We had to play indoors mostly because of the inclement weather and only in the last two weeks did we have a chance to practice outdoors,” Ranatunga said.
Ranatunga admitted that the side was a bit weak in bowling but expected to offset it with depth in batting. (PTI).
