Addressing a legacy of violations of the fundamental freedoms of Sikhs in India, Supreme Court Justice Kuldip Singh has directed the prosecution of nine police officers involved in the abduction, and apparent murder, of human rights activist, Jaswant Singh Khalra. Mr. Khalra, General Secretary of the Human Rights Wing of the Akali Dal was abducted at gunpoint from outside his home in Amritsar on September 6, 1995, after filling a case exposing Punjab police excesses against Sikh civilians.

Last week the Central Bureau of Intelligence in India provided evidence that supported Mr. Khalra’s case and implicated nine Punjab Police officers in Mr. Khalra’s abduction.
