NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister ,P.V Narasimha Rao, on Deo, 10 chaired a high-level meeting called for a comprehensive review of the Jaw and order situation in the militancy hit Jammu and Kashmir.

Besides the Prime Minister, the meeting was attended by the Home Minister, S, B.Chavan, the Finance Minister, Manmohan Singh, Minister of State for Internal Security, Rajesh Pilot, the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Gen K.V.Krishna Rao, (retd), the Minister of State for Defence, Mallikarajun, and the Chief of the Amy staff, General B.C Joshi.

The meeting which was also attended by the Cabinet Secretary, Zafar Satifullah, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, AN.Verma, the Defence Secretary, K.A.Nambiar, and the Finance Secretary, Montek Singh, discussed at length ongoing measures to check militancy in the state and providing more financial assistance to the stale for employment schemes.

The Prime Minister, according to sources, stressed on early measures to revive political activity in the state. It may be recalled that there has been a growing demand from political parties in the state for involving their leaders in the decision-making.

The government has also to take a decision on the appointment of Advisers to fill the vacancies caused by the resignation of Lt Gen M.A.Zaki (retd) and Ashok Jatilay, The present Security Adviser in the state, Lt Gen D.D.Sakjani who is a serving officer, is also due to retire at the end of this month.

The meeting comes in the wake of report that militants in the valley are running desperately short of ammunition and under pressure due to the series of aggressive measures taken by the Army in the last few weeks.

With the onset of winter, the passers have already become snowbound and there are reports that security forces are planning major operations to clear the vital areas in South Kashmir from where.
