SRINAGAR: Twenty nine militants, including 16 Pakistani infiltrators, and a Jammu and Kashmir police constable were among the 31 people killed, while security forces apprehended 10 militants in Kashmir valley.

An official spokesman said that the infiltrators were killed on Dec.10, immediately after they crossed into this side from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir after receiving arms training.

The spokesman said a group of more than 16 militants who were trying to cross over from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir in the curfew bound five km were challenged by Indian troops. The infiltrators fired on the troops who retaliated killing 16 militants. This was the first major attempt by militants to infiltrate through this sector after snowfall, the spokesman said.

The dead body of one Abdul Samad Ganai, a resident of Manigam Pattan, was recovered from village Hari Watnuon Saturday morning. The cause of his death was not known. Official sources told newsmen that the Army, on specific information, conducted search operations at Rat sun village in Badgam district on Friday night to nab militants and their sympathizers, during the searches, militants fired upon the Army and in the exchange of fire eight militants were killed.

A Jammu and Kashmir police constable was killed and an inspector and a head constable of the Border Security Force were injured when a hand grenade, lobbed by militants on a BSF vehicle outside the office of the Pradesh Congress Committee near here, exploded.
