NEW DELHI: Chandra Shekhar Sunday accused the Congress (I) of ruining the country’s economy and overlooking the interests of the poor.
Launching the RS campaign of the Janata Dal (S) he called Congress-I’s election plank of “stability” as “absurd”. He said in the past four years the country had taken a foreign loan of Rs.40000 crore but the amount had frittered away for the benefit of affluent classes instead of providing drinking water medicines schools and other basic necessities to the poor people
Her said the lop-sided policies of the Congress during its 40 years of rule had resulted in a paradoxical situation where the workers peasants and laborers who produced wealth became poorer and the wealth began flowing to the cities. The situation had to be reversed he said
Stating that the country was passing through a grave economic crisis and its unity and integrity was in danger the prime minister said he knew that his party was not big and it had little resources to face the midterm elections.
The prime minister had a dig at commerce and Jaw minister Subramaniam Swamy for negotiating with the Congress (I) leadership for electoral alliance.
He regretted that Swamy was trying to forge an alliance with those who were responsible for the present economic mess.
DEEH: Rajiv Gandhi said that the non-Congress (I) coalition had badly failed in running the affairs of the country as had happened in 1967 and 1977.
Addressing an election meeting here Gandhi said the development of the county was at a standstill during the met 15 member of the non-Congress-I rule.
Gandhi said that when a country got weak other countries imposed various ridiculous conditions on it as was happening in the case of Iraq.
