NEW DELHI: The discussion on the Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act overshadowed the other issues on the agenda of the one day chief ministers’ conference held here. There were six other issues, including violation of human rights and the question of India’s accession of the United Nations Convention against Torture.
Several chief ministers outlined the signs taken by their respective governments to prevent the abuse of human rights, There were differences of opinion on whether India should become a signatory to the UN Convention on torture.
The Prime Minister, P.V, Narasimha Rao, in his brief speech, referred to all the issues but pointed out that the Most important item was the one pertaining to the TADA. The Prime Minister, called for a consensus over the demand for the repeal of the TADA.
“Yam of the considered view that it is best to have a comprehensive dialogues, debate and discussion, he said while addressing chief ministers on TADA.
“In view of the intricate situation, the Central Government feels appropriate decisions have become necessary for which the views of the states where the law is applied, is sought,” the Prime Minister said.
