LUCKNOW, India, Reuter: Olympic champions Pakistan beat the Soviet Union 3-0 to win the Indira Gandhi Hockey Gold Cup on Saturday.

It was Pakistan’s first major triumph since the Olympics and the young side served a warning they will be a major force at the Seoul Olympics.

After early Soviet pressure, Pakistan (ok the lead in the 12th minute, Zahid Sharif shooting home after intercepting a pass.

Shahbaz Ahmad made it 2-0 in the 26th minute when he scooped home from the top of the circle after collecting a pass from Sharif

Pakistan, who lost in the 1986 Asian Games final to South Korea, resumed their attack in the second half but could only score once, in the 60th minute when Waseem Feroz dribbled past two Russian defenders to seal the match.

In the third’ place playoff, South Korea beat New Zealand 3-2 after trailing 10 at halftime

India finished fifth, ahead of Malaysia, Kenya and Spain,
