 LUDHIANA: Former president of India, Zail Singh has urged the govt to follow a policy of dialogue with people of various trouble torn areas to solve their problems. He said that this policy had been successful in sorting out the Naga, Gorkhaland and Mizo problems.

Addressing a literary gathering he said that it was wrong to say that dialogue could be initiated after peace returned to the area, He said the govt could not gain respect and confidence of the people by using force.

He said Punjabis could not bear disrespect. He said a ruler could not rule without respecting the people. Zail Singh further said a govt which could not guarantee security of life or property had no right to remain in office. He appealed to writers to highlight people’s problems and criticize the govt where it went wrong.

Earlier the conferred the BaIraj Sahni award on Dr Gurnam Singh Tir, a noted Punjabi humorist.
