STOCKTON, CA. A National Essay Contest for a various age groups has been sponsored by Sylvan Learning Center in its drive against illiteracy.

Judges for Sylvan Learning Centers “Support Literacy……Write Now” national essay contest will include:

Mr. Marcelo Lopez, Director of the Private Industry Council; Ms. Hilary Rogers, Vice-president of the SUSD School Board; Mr. Gerald Perry, PG&E Public Relations Representative; Dr. Gayle Woolley, Instructor of Writing at UOP; Mr. John Vatsula, Member of the Lodi Unified School Board.

This panel of judges will choose a first, second and third prize winner in each of three age categories for San Joaquin County: 5 to 10; 11 to 14; and 15 to 18. The winner in each category will earn a prize of $50.00, with a matching grant to: the winning student’s school. Also, the winner will go on to compete nationally and have the chance to win a trip to Washington D.C. Second and third prize winners earn $25 and $10 respectively. PTA’s will receive $50.00 per student who enters the contest, up to $25.00.

 The topic of the essay is “How my Life Would Be Different If 1 Couldn’t Read”, Contest details and entry blanks may be obtained by calling or stopping by the Sylvan Learning Center: 1518 W. Hammer Lane, Stockton, Ca. (209) 477-7720. Essays must be received by February 15.
