NEW DELHI — the center on Sunday dissolved the Nagaland assembly and imposed president’s rule after the failure of the eight month old Congress I ministry to sustain its majority. An official spokesman said late in the night that the decision was taken by the Union Cabinet late tonight on the recommendation of the State Governor General K. Krishna Rao. The spokesman said that the governor has reached the conclusion that the situation has arisen that the state cannot be ruled in accordance with the provisions of the constitution. The governor also recommended in the dissolution of the state assembly. The Congress I government headed by Mr. Hokeshe Hema had lost majority by the resignation of some of its members including four ministers. The rebel members formed a. new legislature party called Nagaland Regional Congress.

The Congress I MLAS, who had also resigned from the primary membership of the congress, requested to the speaker to allot them separate seats in the assembly. Soon after the Hema Govt. lost majority the Congress I sent a team of its leaders to Nagaland to assess the situation. Buta Singh the union home minister, who was one of the member of delegation tried his best to win back the legislatures to maintain their majority, but failed.
