Colombo — Tamil separatists movement took a new turn when Muslims living in Tamil majority area were attacked by the Tamil separatists. Muslims in Ceylon are in significant numbers and have come from different parts of the world. Muslims are averse to any kind of division of Ceylon on the basis of religion and are opposed to the Tamil separatist movement. In the event of division they would be reduced to an insignificant minority in both Tamil and Sinhalese areas. Today they enjoy a comparatively better position as they can tilt the balance in favor of one or the other. Both the major communities seek Muslim support.

Muslims are particularly sensitive to Tamil domination as they are aware of the Hindu intolerance of their religion.
