Singh Mand is probably the youngest member of the ninth Lok Sabha. The entry of this barely 25 year old bachelor into politics can be said to the result of anguish.

He comes from Saidaravela village in Ferozepur district. He had no formal education as he joined the Damdami Taksal as a child because of his religious leanings.

Three of his brothers Lakhwinder Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Satnam Singh were killed in “fake” encounters with the police. ‘They all belonged to the “Khalistan commando Force.” This forced him to come out of his religious shell and join politics. He filed his nomination papers as an Independent candidate and was later adopted by the Akali Dal (Mann).

It was during the election campaign that he gave up his flowing robes typical of the members of the Damdami Taksal and took to trousers and shirt.

He defeated none other than the now Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Devi Lal, to wrest the Ferozeore Lok Sabha seat, which was considered a Congress (I) stronghold,
