After an Unsuccessful attempt to get into the Punjab Assembly in 1985, Bimal Kaur Khalsa, widow Of Sub-Inspector Beant Singh, has now gained entry into the Lok Sabha as an Akali Dal (Mann) nominee,

Born on November 7, 1950, in Delhi she comes from a family of artisans of Guraya village in Hoshiarpur district, After her matriculation she Joined the five year Nursing course at Lady Harding Hospital, Delhi where she became a staff nurse in 1973, It was in January, 1976 that she married Beant Singh, then an ASI in the Delhi police.

IN 1985, some months after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, she resigned her job and shifted to Ropar.

“I had no idea of joining polities, but I did so after a directive from the Panth to contest the elections. So my entry into politics was a chance happening,” she says.

She has two sons Sarabjit Singh (11) and Jaswinder Singh (six) and a daughter, Amnit Kaur (12).

Her parents live with her in a Phase V house at SAS Nagar.

She is non-committal on contesting the Assembly poll again. “We will cross the bridge as it comes,” she quips. She considers Mr. Simranjit Singh Mann as her leader.

“Initially I served the sick as a nurse, but now I would serve everyone as an M.P., she says with conviction.”
