CHANDIGARH: Continuing the drive against sale of ‘smuggled” lotteries, the Excise and Taxation Department of the Union Territory conducted raids at various places last week and levied penalties and sales tax worth about Rs 80,000 on erring lottery sellers.

With the raids this week, the department has levied taxes and penalties of about Rs 3 lakh in the current drive which has been going on for the past one week, The raids are being conducted to check “surrounding” of tickets Lo the city from surrounding area, especially Parwanoo, while evading Sales tax. While a sales tax of seven percent is charged on sale of lottery tickets in the city, no such tax is levied in Parwanoo.

A raiding party of the department headed by the Assistant Excise anti Taxation Commissioner (AETC), Mr.S.P, Kansal raided lottery outlets in Manimajra, Sector 17, Villages Attawa, Badheri and Burail Bapu Dham Colony last week. Lottery tickets worth about Rs 10 lakh were seized which were being sold without valid vouchers. Tax and penalties worth about Rs 80,000 were levied during the raids.
