NEW DELHI: Justice Lalit Mohan Sharma was on Nov.18 sworn-in as the chief justice of India by president Dr. Shanker Dayal Sharma at a ceremony at the presidential residence here.
Among those present at the function were vice president K.R Narayanan prime minister P.V Narasimha Rao and his cabinet colleagues.
After taking the oath of office the new chief justice posed for photographs with the president and other dignitaries.
Later talking to newsmen justice Sharma said the chief justice has no special powers and whatever decision is taken is a collective decision of the court.
“We are governed by the constitution” he said.
He succeeds Justice M.H Kania.
