OTTAWA: Kim Campbell became Canada’s first woman Prime Minister after scoring 53% victory at the leadership convention, she said, “the biggest challenge before us is to win the trust and confidence of Canadians.” The 46yearold British Columbian, fell 71 votes short of a first ballot victory, her biggest challenger was John Charest, a 34yearold environment minister in Multoney’s Cabinet. Camp tells is now officially Prime Minister and will sworn into the nation’s top job in the end of this month. On the final ballot, Campbell received 1,817 votes and Charest got 1,630. Merely 187 short of the victory.
