MADRAS: The ruling “Janata Dal Member of Parliament and India’s foremost criminal lawyer Ram Jethmalani, alleged that the Pakistan government was playing a “mischievous and damaging” role vis-a-vis the Punjab issue, even as a major section of the militants were prepared to cooperate with the Indian federal government to solve the vexed Punjab problem.

Pakistan, he said, wanted to create a law and order problem in the state.

Welcoming the statement of S.S. Mann, president, Akali Dal (Mann) that he would attend the all-party meet at Ludhiana if he was invited by the federal government, Jethmalani told reporters here that Mann had been cooperating with the National Front government on the Punjab issue.

Jethmalani said that in the present circumstances, Mann, who ‘was enjoying “overwhelming support” among the Punjab people alone could help the government to solve the issue. He alleged that former home minister Buta Singh was instigating certain elements in the All India Sikh Students Federation which were hostile to any settlement.
