AMRITSAR: The Indian government-controlled Oriental Insurance Company has discontinued personal accident policy covering Punjab’s police personnel. The company refused renewal of the scheme as it had to meet claims of Rs 3.72 crore covering 350 cases as against a premium amount of Rs 35 lakh paid by the police department covering the year ending July 25,1991. The policy envisaged the payment of Rs3 lakh for the death of a gazetted officer, Rs2 lakh for non-gazetted officer and Rs 1 lakh for other ranks. The company has not even paid for the death of DIG Ajit Singh who died at Rataul village in a genuine encounter with militants in May this year.
