BAHRAIN: A substantial number of Indians living in Libya have begun sending their families back home as the U.N. deadline to Libya approached with no sign for a compromise.

Indian Ambassador to Libya Shashank said that the Indians were sending their families out of the country “purely on voluntary basis” after being advised by the Embassy keeping in view that the present tense situation

He said the Libyan authorities had expedited the process of issuing exit visas to Indians who had applied for though the process was still a big slow due to a backlog.

There are about 13000 Indians working in various government and private sectors in the country.

Libya will come under air arms as well as diplomatic sanctions imposed by the U.N. security council from Wednesday if it failed to handover the two suspects alleged by the U.S. and Britain to be involved in the mid-air bombing up a Pan Am jet over Lockerbie in Scotland in 1988.
