AMRITSAR, Punjab, India: April 12, Reuter: Police arrested a Sikh reporter on Tuesday covering the violence in the North Indian state of Punjab.

Kuldip Singh Arora, 36, the Amritsar correspondent of the United News of India (UNI) news agency for detention without trial for up to two years, police told reporters,

They gave no reason for the arrest which surprised other reporters in this Sikh holy city.

Police sources said Arora could have been detained for having close links with the freedom fighters inside the Golden Temple here, the Sikhs’ holiest Shrine.

A UNI spokesman said nothing in Arora’s stories suggested he had such links with the freedom fighters.
