ALIBAG (PTI): The Indian Police here have nabbed three customs officials for their alleged complicity in the illegal landing at a coastal village of explosives used in the serial blasts that rocked Bombay last month.

The village on the western coast, Shrivardhan, was found to be a haven for smugglers and illegal arms dealers after the blasts which claimed about 500 lives.

An assistant collector of customs and two superintendents of customs were arrested by the police.

Police said the trio had allegedly held meetings with Tiger Memon, a prime suspect in the March 12 blasts, besides nine other persons at a hotel here between February 2 and 5.

The three customs persons had allegedly demanded Rs 1 million each for allowing landing of the illegal cargo, of which about two third had been paid to each of them, police said.

Tiger Memon had also telephoned Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Muscat from a private phone booth here, police said, adding that the telephone register containing this information had been seized.
