NEW DELHI: Indian boys pulled a major upset when they defeated fancied Indonesia in the NTT World Junior Asia/ Oceania qualifying tournaments at Hong Kong last week.

Bhasker Choudhury gave India a good start notching up. A 6-1 6-3 win over Peter Hondoyo of Indonesia. Udai Garg then increased the lead to 20 when he whipped Ifan Tanfik 60 63.

Garg then teamed up with Harsh Mankad in the doubles and overcame a spirited Indonesian challenge from Handoyo and W.Vijay 64 46 75 to make a clean sweep.

According to an all India tennis association release received here, Indian girls could not repeat the performance of the boys’ and went down to Australia 03.

 Swati Rao put up a good fight, but lost to B.Stewart 36 46. Uzma Khan then surrendered the second match 16 16. In the girl’s doubles match, Uzma and Apama Ravi lost to B.Stewart and R.Rosenficld 26 57.

In the next round, Indian boys meet China while girls meet Malaysia.
