BRUSSELS, Oct. 1, Reuter: The European Community (EC) said on Thursday it will give India and Laos aid worth 26 million dollars, mostly in the form of food, to help compensate for the effects of drought and floods on their harvests.

The EC’s executive commission said India would receive urgent supplies of vegetable oil, butter oil and milk powder worth 15.6 million European currency units (17.6 million dollars).

India, hit by drought over much of the country and floods in the northeast, will get additional relief of five million ECUS (5.6 million dollars) to buy pumps, medicines and other goods.

The Commission said the 12nation community would give Laos 10,000 tonnes of rice worth 2.5 million ECUS (2.8 million dollars).

It estimated that about 300,000 tonnes, or one quarter, of Laos’ October rice harvest may have been ruined by the late arrival of winter rains.
