LAHORE: India ended their campaign taking the tenth position in the seventh World Cup Hockey after losing the play off to Argentina one zero (1-0) here on Friday.

The overcautious Indian team failed to utilize the few chances that came their way. Argentina’s Carlos Generyo scored the match winner in one two move with Captain Alejandro Verge in the 55th minute.

Argentina who defeated India 5-3 in the pool league here, took the ninth spot. They were sixth at the London world cup four years ago where India hit the bottom in the 12 team tournament,

Captain Pargat Singh made attempts to restore parity moving upfront towards the latter part of the match but his own failing with the penalty corners added to India’s misery. India forced five penalty comers with Ashok Kumar messing up two.

Spearhead Jagbeer Singh and Ram Prakash Singh initiated moves in the second half but Balwinder Singh, coming in for Jude Felix lost two fine scoring chances, thus filling India’s cup of Woes to the very brink.

Balwinder came close to scoring when his drive from the left took the outside net with the ball traveling to him via Hardeep Singh and Jagbeer Singh. ‘Teams: India Mark Patterson, Pargat Singh, Ashok Kumar, B.K.
