LAHORE: India carved out their first victory edging out Canada 2-1 and ensured that they would not finish beyond tenth in the World Cup Hockey championship being played here on Feb 22nd.

Trailing by a Tamkee Lee goal at half time, India bounced back to defeat their opponents with goals from forward Jude Felix and captain Pargat Singh.

The win, after a disappointing performance in the league phase, enables them to meet Argentina, who trounced Ireland 4-1 in another classification match today.

India, who lost to Argentina 5-3 in their pool match, will play for ninth position which would be better than the last spot they occupied in the previous world cup at London four years ago.

The scrappy encounter could have gone against India but for the delayed fight back with forced Pargat Singh to move ahead and score the match winner nine minutes before final hooter.

India forced three of their five penalty corners in the first half but failed to make use of them, outside right Ram Prakash Singh and inside Balwinder Singh made some attempts that went in vain.
