NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), taking cognizance of Rajan Pillai’s death in judicial custody, is sending notice to the Delhi Government and the Tihar Jail here calling for reports. Notices are being sent to the Chief Secretary to the Delhi Government and Inspector General of Prisons asking them to submit reports on the incident within four weeks, a commission spokesperson said here. “The action follows an initial report received from the sub divisional magistrate of Puniabi Bagh in the Capital. he said. The commission has also received two complaints alleging violations of human rights in respect of late Raian Pillai. In a complaint, O.P. Saxena of the All India Lawyers’ Forum for Civil Liberties requested the commission to probe the circumstances leading to. the death of Pillai and to order a high-level probe into the conditions of prisoners in Tihar Jail, the spokesperson said.

The second complaint was received from S. S a seendran, said to be the late businessman’s assistant, urging the commission to investigate the circumstances leading to Pillai’s death. Meanwhile, special Judge M.L. Mehta dropped te extradition proceedings against Pillai, In a brief order, including the proceedings, the judge observed, “the inquiry proceedings against Pillai are being dropped on account of his unfortunate demise.”
