NEW DELHI India Reute: Police fired in the air after teargas and baton charges failed to disperse rioters protesting at the massacre of 24 Hindus by unknown gunmen in Punjab the Press Trust of India (PTI) said.

The news agency said about 2500 people threw stones and damaged buses in West Delhi home of many Hindus who have fled violence in Punjab.

Fifteen people were arrested. No casualties were reported.

A police spokesman said patrols had been increased. Sikhs and Hindus clashed in the West of the Capital after gunmen shot 14 Hit du bus passengers at Muktsar in Punjab on July 25.

Police banned gatherings of more than four people in Delhi for the next four days and described the city as tense.

Meanwhile security has been lightened in Punjab cities following HinduSikh clashes in Jullundur Hoshiarpur and Amritsar. In Jullundur Hindu mobs stoned Sikh shops and tried to burn cars scooters and buses. The police intervened to control them. According to reports from Delhi Sikh houses were arsoned and Sikhs were at tacked on the roads. There are also reports of killing of six Sikhs in Delhi.

Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi called the killings in Hoshiarpur district a dastardly crime.

Police in the Punjab capital Chandigarh said at least four gun-men forced a bus off a road and separated Hindus from Sikhs. They shot the Hindus at close range with automatic weapons and revolvers killing 24 and injuring eight.
