CHANDIGARH, India, Jan. 9, Reuter: Unknown assailants gunned down a government party worker they suspected of being a police informer along with six of his family members in the bloodiest day of violence in northern Punjab state in weeks, police said today.

Gunmen shot dead Gurmej Singh, a member of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s Congress (I) party, his wife, four children and another relative late yesterday near the Sikh holy city of Amritsar.

The gunmen also shot dead three farm laborers in a separate attack in the same area yesterday, police said.

It was the heaviest daily toll since the killing of 24 Hindu bus passengers in the Sikh majority state on November 30. The killings brought the toll so far this month to 19. Unofficial figures put deaths last year in violence at 697.
