TBILISL,ASIA: Fierce fighting broke out between Georgian troops and separatists in Georgia’s western region of Abkhazia hours before a cease-fire was to take effect, reports from both sides said.

According to the reporters, Georgian Defense Minister Tengiz Kitovani said a ship shelled Georgian positions near Gagra recently. A Georgian official said 10 Georgian soldiers died and 20 were wounded.

During negotiations in the Russian resort of Sochi, Georgian, Abkhazian and Russian officials had agreed to begin a cease-fire, to stop all military movements and to exchange prisoners and hostages.
