NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Thursday deplored the pro Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party’s ultimatum to the Govt and said this left the center with no opinion but to adopt firm measures to maintain communal amity.

The BJP, which along with the CPIM is an outside ally of the Govt, has said it will withdraw support if Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh does not allow a temple to be built in Ayodhya in place of a medieval mosque. Fundamentalist Hindus claim the Babti Masjid, the Muslim shrine, is located at the site of the birthplace of the mythical Hindu god, Ram.

The CPI (M) politburo said it deplored “this intransigent attitude of the BJP, which shows their total unconcern for maintaining peace and communal amity in the country.

Accusing the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the BJP of going back on their commitments to maintain status quo with respect to the disputed site in Ayodhya, the politburo said: “the time has come for all patriotic citizens to stand up to the communal challenge.”

“Due to the intractable stand of the BJP, the National Front Govt has now no other option but to adopt a firm stand to maintain law and order and see that communal amity is in no way disturbed by the BJPVHP programme, the politburo said.
